A rash of 70 earthquakes hit the Pacific Ocean’s infamous ‘Ring of Fire’ over a 48-hour period earlier this week, prompting some to wonder if it is a precursor to “The Big One.” Several of the quakes on Monday and Tuesday (20 & 21 August 2018) registered significant impacts, including one that reached 5.0 on the Richter scale. Fiji appeared to be the most impacted, as five tremors above a 4.5 magnitude hit the small island. Others rattled Indonesia, Bolivia and Japan. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the events but did not issue any warnings.
“The Big One” refers to an anticipated earthquake of magnitude 8 or above, causing massive destruction to California, which some have said is long overdue. California sits on the San Andreas fault, a 750-mile fault-line that is part of the ‘Ring of Fire.’ The last earthquake of that scale in California was a 7.9 quake in 1906 which destroyed 80 percent of San Francisco and left 3,000 people dead.
A massive earthquake registering 8.2 was registered on Sunday (19 August), hitting 174 miles north-northeast of Ndoi Island, Fiji, according to the the USGS. Luckily, the massive quake did not cause any significant damage, hitting at a depth of 347.7 miles, too deep to cause a tsunami.
The Ring of Fire is a 25,000 mile horseshoe-shaped ring around the Pacific Rim, accounting for approximately 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes. The region also contains 452 volcanoes, more than 75 percent of the world’s active and dormant volcanoes.
In recent months, there have been indications of major seismic activity in California and unusual pressure building in the geothermal plume under Yellowstone Park in Wyoming – all of which are part of the ‘Ring of Fire.’
MY COMMENT: In my book Floodgates, I describe how the Bible prophesies major earthquake activities in the last days, all in connection with a catastrophic global judgment on a par with the Flood of Noah. However, the divine judgment is not by water but by fire this time. The most clear prophetic passage on this is Isaiah 24, which in my view is the scariest chapter in the entire Bible. It speaks of the surface of the earth being distorted (v. 1); its inhabitants are burned, and few men are left (v. 6); the windows on high (arubba shamayim or floodgates) are opened, and the foundations of the earth are shaken (v. 18); the earth splits open, and staggers like a drunkard (v. 20); but it all ends well – with the Lord reigning on Mt. Zion in Jerusalem! (Isaiah 24:23)
The windows of heaven and fountains of the deep were the same portals or gateways that allowed in the flood waters (Gen 7:11 & 8:2), but this time they will allow in the fiery judgment of God, via earthquakes, volcanoes, meteors, etc. The book of Revelation is full of these type judgments, repeatedly featuring the motif of fire from above and below! The Apostles Peter and Jude both say that the fire and brimstone which destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah serve as an example of the fiery judgment awaiting mankind at the end of the age. I believe we are rapidly approaching that day due to humanity’s grave moral slide and rebellion against God.
